Rafael Nadal Teases Potential Return to French Open After 2024

Rafael Nadal, the 14-time French Open champion, has hinted that this year’s Roland Garros may not be his last. Despite earlier statements suggesting he might retire after the current season, the 37-year-old Spaniard has not ruled out a future return.

Nadal’s Uncertain Future at Roland Garros

Speaking in Paris on Saturday, Rafael Nadal addressed the speculation about his potential retirement. “In terms of whether this will be my last Roland Garros, it’s a long answer,” he began. “I need to address this to avoid future questions. There’s a big chance it might be my last, but I can’t say for certain. I cannot predict the future. I hope you understand.”

Recovery and Enjoyment

Nadal highlighted his lengthy recovery from a severe injury, which has involved almost two years of pain and rehabilitation. However, he noted that he currently feels better and is enjoying playing tennis again. “I’m enjoying playing tennis, traveling with my family, and sharing this process with them,” he said. “I haven’t yet explored the possibility of playing in more or less healthy conditions, without limitations.”

A Decision Deferred

The tennis legend requested more time before making a definitive decision about his future. “Maybe in a month and a half, I might decide it’s enough and I can’t keep going. But today, I can’t guarantee that this will be my last French Open,” Nadal explained. “There’s a significant chance, but the door isn’t completely closed.”

Tough First-Round Match

This year, Nadal enters Roland Garros unseeded for the first time. His first-round opponent is world No. 4 Alexander Zverev, who recently won a Masters 1000 event. “On paper, it’s not the best draw,” Nadal admitted. “I’m facing one of the toughest opponents possible, who has just won a major event. But that’s the draw, and I just have to be ready for it.”
