Johnny McKinstry Appointed Head Coach of Gambia’s Men’s National Team

In a major development, the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) has named Johnny McKinstry as the head coach of the men’s senior team. McKinstry, known for leading Gor Mahia to consecutive Kenyan league titles, will start his new role on June 1 under a two-year contract.

McKinstry biggest challenge

McKinstry’s primary goal is to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The Northern Irish coach, 38, will debut with the Scorpions in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Seychelles on June 8 and Gabon on June 11.

The Gambia currently faces a tough situation, sitting fifth in Group I after losses to Burundi and Ivory Coast. The selection process reportedly included notable candidates such as Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure.

Previous Experience

McKinstry brings a wealth of experience from his roles with the national teams of Sierra Leone, Rwanda, and Uganda. His predecessor, Tom Saintfiet, made history by leading The Gambia to their first Africa Cup of Nations and achieving consecutive qualifications. Saintfiet’s tenure ended after a group-stage exit at the 2023 Nations Cup, but he significantly improved the team’s FIFA world ranking by 42 places.

Future Prospects

The GFF has high hopes for McKinstry as he aims to build on Saintfiet’s success. The draw for the 2025 Nations Cup qualifiers is yet to take place, with matches scheduled for September, October, and November. The exact dates for the finals in Morocco next year are still to be confirmed.
